The beautiful Natural History Museum in Brabant has a large collection of fossil mammoth bones. With the aim of using these bones, they hope to create a whole mounted skeleton. Our project was to make an inventory of what bones they have, and what they still need to acquire. This is not as easy as it sounds as these bones come from different age and sex mammoths, so there is lots of variation in size. In addition, we had to check the condition of the bones: can they be used in a mount? Are the colors similar in appearance to be used together? Fossils vary from very dark in color (very old) to more recent pale bones. Over two days, we sorted through the bones and discovered that the museum is well on its way to a complete skeleton! The highlight was the hip, though it was in two pieces, each side is so similar in color and size we think they came from the same animal! The next step is to create a report for the museum so that they can choose to make a plan to find or print the missing bones. Stay tuned!
